Hey, scoliosis sisters! We all know that mental health and physical health go hand-in-hand. With scoliosis, both very important to pay attention to! Chronic pain has been shown to increase your chance for having Depression, Anxiety, Insomnia, bursts of anger and much more. It makes sense when you really think about it. A little kid who is not feeling well, typically will be more cranky than usual. This doesn’t change as we reach adulthood. Our body is signaling to our brain that something is wrong, which increases your fight or flight instinct making us agitated.

I take multiple prescription meds, 3 times a day, for my MDD, GAD, OCD, and PTSD. Unfortunately, that is still not enough for me to feel any kind of “normal” (my psychiatrist and I have been working together for a few years now to find the best mix of meds. This process can take years to figure out especially with complicated conditions). But, with my new therapist (not psychiatrist) we are now thinking that I might have been misdiagnosed and have BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) which makes way more sense!

So, as an advocate for myself, I did research on supplements to help alleviate more of my symptoms.

***NOTE: It’s important to check for drug interactions with the any meds you are on! If you take an SSRI – some of these supplements may cause Serotonin Syndrome. Check with your doctor before taking any supplements.

Serotonin Syndrome occurs when you take medications that cause high levels of the chemical serotonin to accumulate in your body.

Serotonin is a chemical your body produces that’s needed for your nerve cells and brain to function. But too much serotonin causes signs and symptoms that can range from mild (shivering and diarrhea) to severe (muscle rigidity, fever and seizures). Severe serotonin syndrome can cause death if not treated.

Serotonin syndrome can occur when you increase the dose of certain medications or add a new drug to your regimen. Some illegal drugs and dietary supplements also are associated with serotonin syndrome.

Milder forms of serotonin syndrome may go away within a day of stopping the medications that cause symptoms and, sometimes, after taking drugs that block serotonin.”

With that being said…. Let’s get into the supplements!

1). Mood Joy

I found this gem on Amazon for only $20 for a 2 month supply! I also have subscription for it to be shipped every 2 months, which gives me a discount!

Ingredients: 5-HTP, Ashwagandha, St. John’s Wort, Turmeric, and MCT Oil Powder.

5-HTP: made from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia, are widely available. People are increasingly turning to these supplements to help boost their moods, regulate their appetites, and help with muscular discomfort.

Ashwagandha: enhances the function of the brain and nervous system and improves the memory. It improves the function of the reproductive system promoting a healthy sexual and reproductive balance. Being a powerful adaptogen, it enhances the body’s resilience to stress. Ashwagandha improves the body’s defense against disease by improving the cell-mediated immunity. It also possesses potent antioxidant properties that help protect against cellular damage caused by free radicals.

St. John’s Wort: “(Hypericum perforatum) is a flowering shrub native to Europe. It gets its name from the fact that it often blooms on the birthday of the biblical John the Baptist.

The flowers and leaves of St. John’s wort contain active ingredients such as hyperforin. St. John’s wort is available as a supplement in teas, tablets, liquids and topical preparations.

St. John’s Wort is often used to treat depression and menopausal symptoms” as well as Nephropathy and Nerve Pain.

NOTE: This will decrease the effectiveness of Oral Contraceptives!

Turmeric: “Researchers have found that phytochemicals from natural foods, such as the curcumin found in turmeric, may be a safe and effective way to help reduce inflammation and prevent and treat disease. While acute inflammatory responses are beneficial for the body in that they help heal injury, irritation, or infection, we know that chronic inflammation can contribute to disease onset. There is promising research to support curcumin’s use for the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects on obesity, to reduce arthritis pain and swelling, and to aid in complications such as diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy, and cardiomyopathy.”

MCT Oil: short for medium-chain triglycerides, are a type of saturated fat mostly derived from coconut oil and palm oil. MCTs are used and processed within the body more easily than other types of fats.

2.) Ashwagandha and Black Pepper Extract

Get this on Amazon for $18. I know you are thinking, “why take Ashwagandha if it’s in that first blend?” Because, I need MORE. The amount of Ashwagandha in the first supplement is great, but I noticed adding this into the mix is more beneficial for me personally. I have issues with my digestive system from anxiety and this supplement has helped so much!!!

Ashwagandha: More info – “(Withania somnifera, fam. Solanaceae) is commonly known as “Indian Winter cherry” or “Indian Ginseng”. It is one of the most important herb of Ayurveda (the traditional system of medicine in India) used for millennia as a Rasayana for its wide ranging health benefits. Rasayana is described as an herbal or metallic preparation that promotes a youthful state of physical and mental health and expands happiness. These types of remedies are given to small children as tonics, and are also taken by the middle-aged and elderly to increase longevity. Among the ayurvedic Rasayana herbs, Ashwagandha holds the most prominent place. It is known as “Sattvic Kapha Rasayana” Herb (Changhadi, 1938). Most of the Rasayana herbs are adaptogen / anti-stress agents.”

Black Pepper Extract: “its active compound piperine may have potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Laboratory studies suggest that [it] may improve cholesterol levels, blood sugar control, and brain and gut health.”

3.) Adrenal Caps

Okay, so these are the exact opposite of a vegan supplement, so scroll past this one if you are sensitive to hearing about animals.

I also found this on… you guessed it, Amazon and It is only $13! Adrenal Caps are made from the adrenal glands of slaughtered animals. I try not to think about it too much because this supplement has helped me have SO MUCH MORE energy. Not the anxious hyper energy that coffee gives me, but a steady and calm energy throughout the day. It gives me that feeling of accomplishment and peace while going about my day.

Adrenal Extract: By mouth, adrenal extract is used for low adrenal function, fatigue, stress, lowered resistance to illness, severe allergies, asthma, certain skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

4.) Melatonin

I actually just got this at my local grocery store for like $3, maybe? I used to hate taking melatonin because I was never consistent about taking it. Now, I take it every single night! My sleep schedule has historically been a mess, but this helps me feel tired and ready for a great night of sleep, not exhausted and dreading tossing and turning all night.

Melatonin: “is a hormone that your brain produces in response to darkness. It helps with the timing of your circadian rhythms (24-hour internal clock) and with sleep. Being exposed to light at night can block melatonin production. Research suggests that melatonin plays other important roles in the body beyond sleep.”

“It may also be beneficial in treatment of stomach ulcers, heartburn, tinnitis, and may increase levels of HGH in men.”

There you have it!

Those are my supplements I take everyday! I also take a gummy prenatal vitamin (not bc im preggers), which has tons of various B vitamins for energy, fish oil for heart health, biotin for skin and nails, and lots more! In my opinion, prenatal vitamins are drastically better and more cost effective than any other multivitamin out there.

I also want to show y’all my pill box! I LOVE how happy it is!

I have a Cricut, so I made this cute decal to stick on it to brighten my day up! If you have a Cricut also, download my SVG file below to make your own super cute pill box decal!
